Music can be incredibly powerful by creating lasting memories and producing a range of emotions. No doubt we all have songs that remind us of happy times and sad times and reach for a certain playlist depending on our mood.
Although it is not a cure, whenever I don’t quite feel my sparkly self, listening to music can put a smile on my face and make me forget about what was bothering me (even if it’s just for a few minutes). Even better if I can listen to those songs at full blast and sing a long – preferably in the car!
In the weeks leading up to me leaving my abusive relationship whenever I got chance to drive on my own, I used to listen to ‘This is Me’ from The Greatest Showman and ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen. It may sound crazy, but I believe that those 2 songs helped give me strength to realise that I had become completely trapped and lost and that I needed to leave in order to look after myself and my children – with the aim of being free to be me and to live my life. Every word in ‘This is Me’ reminded me of the situation I was in, but I decided that…
‘I won’t let them break me down to dust I know that there’s a place for us For we are glorious’
Same goes for ‘Let It Go’, I felt as thought I was living in ‘a kingdom of isolation’ and looking back the lyrics are very fitting especially now I am free from that relationship…
‘It’s funny how some distance makes everything seem small And the fears that once controlled me can’t get to me at all It’s time to see what I can do To test the limits and break through No right, no wrong, no rules for me I’m free!’
I have a playlist of songs I listen to that help give me strength, particularly during challenging times I have faced over the past couple of years and when I have struggled to deal with everything, I have faced but I owe some of the strength I have found within me to various artists and the songs I have listened to, sung at the top of my voice and danced to on repeat during these times.
1.Stronger – Kelly Clarkson – ‘You think you got the best of me, think you had the last laugh, bet you think that everything good is gone, think you left me broken down, think that I’d come running back, baby you don’t know me, ‘cause you’re dead wrong’ – These lyrics definitely remind me of my ex as although I have my good and not so good days, I know that I am stronger than ever and I know I should be proud of myself for leaving as I have given myself the chance to find myself again.
2. Better When I’m Dancin – Megan Trainor (no matter what mood you’re in, this is sure to get you smiling and singing along!)
3. What You’re Made Of – Lucie Silvas
4. We Got Love – Jessica Mauboy –
‘Why do we always feel like we need to try?
Why do we believe that we need to be somebody else
To feel alive? I know, I know what you must be thinking
That we are powerless to change things
But don’t, don’t give up
‘Cause we got love, ’cause we got love
I won’t throw my hands up to surrender
‘Cause love is stronger than fire
So don’t, don’t give up
‘Cause we got love, ’cause we got love’
This song is very upbeat and the louder you can play it the better! These lyrics definitely make me feel empowered and that love can come in many shapes and forms. I know that I am loved by my friends and family and I am working on loving myself. I think in the past I have looked for someone else to love me to feel loveable but my perspective on this is changing – of course it’s nice to be loved but I now realise that someone else’s love doesn’t define me.
5. Brave – Sara Bareilles
6. How Far I’ll Go – Moana
7. I’m Alive – Celine Dion
8. You Gotta Be – Des’ree
And of course
9. This Is Me – The Greatest Showman
10. Let It Go – Frozen
